How memory foam works
Viscoelastic foam softens with body heat and moulds to the shape pressing into it, then recovers slowly. That is what produces the even, contoured support it is known for, and also why it feels firmer in a cold room and softer as the night goes on.
Solid foam
A single moulded block, often contoured. It holds one shape consistently, which gives predictable support and is excellent if that shape suits your neck. It cannot be adjusted, so if the loft is wrong it stays wrong.
Shredded foam
The same material torn into pieces and loosely filled. It can be redistributed by hand to change the shape, it conforms more like a conventional pillow, and it breathes considerably better because air moves between the pieces.
Adjustable pillows
Shredded fill in a pillow with an opening so you can remove or add material. This is the most reliable way to get the loft right, because you tune it to your own shoulder rather than choosing from three fixed heights. Keep the removed fill in case you need it back.
Heat retention
Solid foam traps heat because there is no airflow through it. Manufacturers address this with gel infusions, ventilation channels and cooling covers, with varying effect. Shredded foam is inherently cooler for the same reason it is adjustable.
The first few days
New foam has a distinct smell that dissipates over a few days of airing. It is normal and not a defect. Foam also feels firmer when new and settles slightly with use, so judging a pillow on the first night is unfair to it.
Weight and handling
Memory foam pillows are heavier than fibre or down. Solid blocks in particular are noticeably heavy, which matters when changing bedding. Covers with zips make this easier than pillowcases that have to be wrestled on.
Washing
Solid foam generally cannot be machine washed; the cover comes off and the foam is spot cleaned and aired. Shredded fill in a washable inner is sometimes machine washable, but check the listing rather than assuming. Water trapped in foam takes a very long time to dry.
Lifespan
Memory foam gradually loses its recovery and stops springing back. When a pillow stays compressed in the morning rather than returning to shape, it has reached the end of its useful life regardless of how it looks.
How this applies when you are buying
Solid foam holds one fixed shape and gives consistent support, which is ideal if that shape suits you and unhelpful if it does not. Shredded foam can be redistributed, and on adjustable pillows removed, so you can tune the height. Shredded also breathes better, which matters if you sleep warm.
