Loft and firmness: matching a pillow to how you sleep
Two specifications decide whether a pillow works for you, and neither is the brand.
What this covers
- What loft means
- What firmness means

- Back sleepers need the middle
- Stomach sleepers need the least
- Combination sleepers
- Shoulder width changes the answer

What loft means
Loft is the height of the pillow when your head is on it. It determines whether your neck stays in line with your spine or is pushed up or allowed to drop. It is the single most important specification and the one most listings bury.
What firmness means
Firmness is resistance to compression: how much the pillow gives under the weight of your head. A soft pillow with high loft can compress to a low effective height. Loft and firmness therefore have to be read together rather than separately.
Side sleepers need the most height
Sleeping on your side leaves a gap between your ear and the mattress roughly equal to the width of your shoulder. Filling that gap keeps the neck level, which needs a high loft and enough firmness to hold it through the night. This is the position with the least tolerance for the wrong pillow.
Back sleepers need the middle
On your back the gap is smaller, so a medium loft supports the natural curve of the neck without pushing the head forward. Too high and the chin is driven towards the chest; too low and the head tips back. Contour shapes often suit this position well.
Stomach sleepers need the least
Sleeping face down with a high pillow forces the neck upwards and rotates it sideways for hours. The flattest, softest pillow available is the right answer, and some people are genuinely more comfortable with none at all under the head.
Combination sleepers
Most people move during the night. If you change position regularly, a medium loft with some adjustability is the practical compromise, because it is tolerable in more than one position rather than ideal in one.
Shoulder width changes the answer
Two side sleepers of different builds need different lofts. Broader shoulders create a larger gap and need a higher pillow. This is why a recommendation that worked for someone else may not work for you, and why loft is quoted rather than a single suggested model.
Mattress firmness interacts with it
A soft mattress lets the shoulder sink in, which reduces the gap and therefore the loft needed. A firm mattress does the opposite. If you change mattress, the pillow that suited you may stop suiting you, and that is not the pillow failing.
How to tell it is wrong
Waking with neck stiffness, needing to fold the pillow, or pushing it under the shoulder are all signs of insufficient loft. Waking with a sore neck and the head propped forward suggests too much. The symptoms are specific enough to diagnose.
How this applies when you are buying
Solid foam holds one fixed shape and gives consistent support, which is ideal if that shape suits you and unhelpful if it does not. Shredded foam can be redistributed, and on adjustable pillows removed, so you can tune the height. Shredded also breathes better, which matters if you sleep warm.
Solid contour and shredded memory foam pillows, including adjustable-fill options, with loft and firmness stated per listing.
