Down and feather are not the same
Down is the soft under-plumage with no quills; feather has quills and is firmer and heavier. Most pillows sold as down are a blend, and the ratio is what determines the feel and the price. A high feather content is firmer and cheaper.
Why down feels the way it does
Down clusters trap air, which makes them light, insulating and highly compressible. A down pillow moulds around the head immediately and can be shaped by hand, which is what people mean when they say a pillow feels luxurious.
The compression problem
Down and feather compress overnight, so a pillow that feels right at bedtime is lower by morning. Regular fluffing restores the loft and is genuinely part of owning one. If you will not do that, this is not the right fill for you.
Allergies
Down is not suitable for everyone. Where allergy is a concern, down alternative fibre fill gives a similar softness without the trigger, which is much of why the category exists. Hypoallergenic labelling on a fibre pillow is a meaningful claim rather than marketing.
What down alternative is
Polyester microfibre engineered to imitate the loft and softness of down. It is lighter on cost, machine washable, and hypoallergenic. It is the most widely bought fill for those three reasons together.
Clumping over time
Fibre fill migrates and clumps with use, which leaves lumps and thin areas. Washing and thorough drying redistributes it to a degree. Eventually it does not recover, and that is normally what ends the life of a down alternative pillow.
Cotton shells and thread count
The shell matters more on feather pillows, because quills work their way through a loose weave. A tightly woven cotton shell with a high thread count contains them. If a feather pillow is poking you, the shell is the cause rather than the fill.
Washing and drying
Fibre pillows are usually machine washable. Down can be washed but must be dried completely, which takes far longer than people expect; damp down clumps and can develop odour. Dryer balls help break up the fill during drying.
Cost over time
Down costs more initially and lasts longer with maintenance. Fibre costs less and is replaced more often. Over several years the totals are closer than the shelf prices suggest, and the deciding factor is usually allergy and washability rather than money.
How this applies when you are buying
Down and feather pillows are light, mould around the head and last a long time if fluffed regularly. They compress overnight, so what feels right at bedtime is lower by morning. They are not suitable if you are allergic, and they need a protector because they are harder to wash than fibre fill.
Goose and duck down and feather pillows with cotton shells, light and mouldable with regular fluffing.
